I’ve been running my own business now for over 17 years. Today it is successful and I love every minute of it. But it certainly hasn’t always been that way.
Running any business today can be challenging and I’m sure you have all faced your own up-hill battles from time to time. We have all faced moments when we have wondered if we were ever going to make our businesses a success. I’m sure you’ve asked yourself “Will it ever work?”, “Am I doing the right thing?” or “How long shall I give myself?”. I’m betting every one of you have considered giving up at some point, especially at the start.
In fact, when I began my business, back in that warm summer of 2000, It was almost 18 months before I had a real, proper client. To be honest, I know what the real trouble was. I lacked a skill that I had to hone and adapt during those first few years. The skill of ‘focusing’. Yes, I simply wasn’t focused enough. I hadn’t given my business what it really needed – a definite POSITIVE ENERGY! I’ve learned that this is absolutely imperative. In fact, it’s pretty much the same in every aspect of my life. When my energy and my attention is positive, great things begin to happen. I have no idea exactly how, or why, this is the case. But trust me, it really is the case.
Why did you start your business? I started mine not to be rich, but primarily to gain freedom. Having worked for a large corporation previously, I was convinced I could deliver a better service on my own. I knew I could do more good on my own. I could assist people who really needed my help in a much more consistent and personal way. For the first time, I began to give my business real positive attention and support. I knew I could help people to gain better online presences. I knew the world wide web was the way to go. It wasn’t until my finances began to shrink that I changed the way I did things. With a safety net of cash that I’d saved up over several years in order to ‘go it alone’, at first I think I was just playing at this ‘running a business’ malarkey. It was when the cash flow began to get tight, and I was worried about paying the bills, that I actually started to take my business seriously. I became much more visioned and focused, much more determined than ever before. I knew this new direction, going it alone, was the right thing for me to do and I felt good about my intentions and ability to help others.
Having money worries was, as it turned out, the best thing that could have happened to me and my business. It filled me with fear. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing because it helped me to concentrate totally on what really matters and on ensuring I was getting it right. I simply didn’t have a choice anymore. I was completely lit up and attentive to what I wanted and needed to do for myself, my clients and my business. My primary aim of helping people to succeed themselves became overpowering for me.
As soon as I had fully woken up to the idea that my ‘people to people’ business couldn’t succeed until I actually focused on doing good by all who came by my office, I never looked back. Sure, things didn’t always go to plan.. I had discovered that the reasons for this were often in my own hands. It was when I wasn’t completely doing the right thing or was diverted by life generally, that my business suffered.
Net Island And The Positive Energy Surrounding It
Here’s the really incredible thing I’ve learned. By putting only positive energy into Net Island, and by waking every day knowing that we are doing some real good here, my business is flourishing. It’s amazing. Positivity, good intentions. These things are not to be underestimated. And as Net Island continues to grow, I can help more and more people get to where they want to be. This really is a great job.
Net Island appears to have an energy all of its own. I actually think it does. Positivity begets positivity. Good begets good. I’m certain of it. That’s the lesson I’ve learned.
The Universe is listening. Stay positive every day. I know it’s not always easy, but give it your best shot. After all, what is the alternative? Because, for some reason, when you do this, when you concentrate on your business and give it the attention it deserves, amazing things really do happen.
I wish you well in your business and in your life. Stay positive and focused. It works.
